  The Foundation believes that, with proper encouragement and sufficient support, disadvantaged youths can and will
  1) excel academically, 2) set career goals, 3) develop strong leadership skills and 4) become Detroit's future.

  Establishment of this fund is to provide assistance to City of Detroit residents in financing their education at Wayne State
  University and to encourage continued progress towards a degree and recognize scholastic achievement.

  Why was the fund established?

Establishment of this fund is to provide assistance to City of Detroit residents in financing their education at Wayne State University and to encourage continued progress towards a degree and recognize scholastic achievement.

  How is the Scholarship funded?

Mr. Baker donated the majority of his estate tot he Howard baker Foundation. The Scholarship is funded through this generous contribution. It was his desire to illustrate this dedicated commitment to the City of Detroit and its residents.

  The Scholarship is awarded to students who wish to attend Wayne State University, according to the following provisions:

1.  Application will be accepted from undergraduate minority students of Wayne State University or from
     minority students accepted for full-time study at Wayne State University.

2.  Preference shall be given to students majoring in nursing or in a natural science curriculum, however, other
     curriculums will be considered.

3.  Recipients must be Detroit (public, private or parochial) high school graduates, residents of the City of
     Detroit and United States citizens.

4.  Recipients are selected on the basis of financial need.
